ABSTRACT

At Cromarty Bridge all structural elements excepting the internal support beams were investigated in the first three spans at the southern end (see Figure 3); access was by use of an underbridge machine. At Kessock, 1 no. main span pier, 1 no. approach span pier and 1 no. land based approach span pier were investigated (see Figure 7) with only the cutwaters and column bases tested utilising boat access or by working at low tide (Figure 8). The pier tops at deck level were also investigated for the two marine based piers using abseiling techniques for access (see Figure 9).
