A combustion system consists of the combustor, the heat load, the heat generator, and in some cases a heat recuperation system. In industrial combustion systems, the heat generator consists of

one or more burners where a fuel is combusted with an oxidizer ranging from air to pure oxygen. The effects of the oxidizer composition are considered in this chapter. There are many types of burners, which are tailored to meet the specific needs of the heat load and the combustor. With the increasing emphasis on reducing pollutant emissions and increasing thermal efficiency, which are often at odds with each other, there has been a need for continuous improvement in the design of burners. The various methods used to design burners are briefly considered in this chapter. The increasing demands on burner performance have caused an increase in the use of advanced computational techniques to design and optimize burners in a wide range of industrial applications.
