ABSTRACT

Increasing demands for our dwindling natural resources are causing agricul turalists to consider the environmental consequences of our current production practices. The addition of nitrogen (N) to surface water and groundwater degrades the quality of water available for human and animal consumption. Because the N contained in the feces and urine produced by livestock can contribute to the addition of N to our water resources, it is imperative that the industries involved with animal agriculture focus their attention on ways to maximize N utilization and minimize N excretion through improved feeding practices.
