ABSTRACT

Adhesion arising from the connection of two materials via a film of a third material (an adhesive) is not at issue here. Instead, in this chapter the focus is on , 'fundamental" adhesion between two materials, or surfaces, arising from interatomic or intermolecular forces [1,2]. These forces essentially depend on the chemistry and physics of the two surfaces, typically solid, and the intervening medium, typicallyair or liquid.
