ABSTRACT

The inspector of composites must be familiar with the many types of construction materials and fabrication methods and must be aware of the type of defects expected as well as the limitations of each NDT technique [3]. For composite materials themselves, their physical degradation is dependent upon their composition, the type of defect, and the operating environment. Accurate defect detection and quantitative information enable an assessment to be made of the remaining life expectation of the material. To achieve this, quality control should occur during all phases of manufacture and during in-service operations.
