ABSTRACT

In elementary school, I was taught that there were three basic necessities in lifefood, shelter and clothing. In 1959 when I graduated from college, there was a concern that India could not provide these necessities for her people and that many of the people of India would starve. There were discussions in the agricultural research community and the popular press concerning the dire straits in India. There were immense efforts made to assist India through those trying times. There was food aid, population control efforts, and efforts by agricultural scientists to increase food production and to reduce food losses in India. India did not starve, partly because of the green revolution spearheaded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug and the efforts he and others led to develop grain varieties to feed the world.
