ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper provides on overview of the validation approach for the short-, medium-, and long-term development of European Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems. A performance-driven management process is adopted. The performance attributes considered in this paper are capacity and safety. A method to break down overall capacity targets into more detailed target values at the local level is explained. Capacity is currently related to air traffic controller workload and the need to increase controller productivity is expressed. A large-scale validation demonstration related to the increase of controller productivity is also outlined. Finally, initial results of a systematic approach to analytically model the collision risk of aircraft in relation to the separation of air-routes in the early concept development phase is outlined.
