ABSTRACT

Cybrarians administer online information environments that offer access to an assortment of resources and information services. While not necessarily traditional librarians, cybrarians specialize in online research and information retrieval and attempt to develop and organize collections and services into a useful and integrated environment. These environments are not single entities; rather, they allow many transparent linkages to other environments that provide universal access to information and document collections, including digital items that cannot be displayed or distributed on paper (i.e., audio and video). Cybrarians not only mediate between diverse and distributed information, but also the changing range of user communities. In this, a library is less known for its holdings than its access to networked online environments. Consequently, we can think in terms of one allencompassing library where patrons have access all the time, everywhere, on any device.
