ABSTRACT

Most computer users give little or no thought to the operating system they use. Windows, which in 2002 was on record for its presence on 90 percent of desktop computers, is so ubiquitous as to be assumed by many as the only way for computers to function. There is Mac OS, of course, but the trifling 5 percent of the market it garnered as of 2000 is of little consequence except to Mac enthusiasts. However, another option exists, one whose devotees are almost evangelical. Linux is hailed by many as the best operating system around.
