ABSTRACT

In Australia, cold-formed stainless steel tubular sections have been marketed for structural purposes since 1989. To stimulate the use of these sections in buildings, design guidelines were recently developed at the University of Sydney for the bending and compression strengths of stainless steel square and circular hollow sections (Rasmussen & Hancock 1990, 1992). These guidelines complemented the ASCE Specification for the Design of Cold-formed Stainless Steel Structural Members (ASCE 1990) which is based mainly on tests of light gauge open sections.
