ABSTRACT

given in Table 3. Omitting the specimen Ts 1. for all other specimens. the fatigue lives were reduced between 28% to 51% under freely corroding conditions. The DEn guidance note has recommended a penalty factor of 2 on air fatigue lives to be used for unprotected joints exposed to seawater environment. This penalty factor recommended by DEn to account for free corrosion seems to be adequate. The experimental results are compared with DEn curves in Fig. 4. The S-N curves recommended by DnVand NPD assume adequate corrosion protection and no mention is made about the penalty factor for freely corroding conditions. As can be seen from Table 3. omitting the specimen Tsl. the DnV code estimates unconservative lives for two joints to an extent of 46%. and for specimen Ys2. it estimates the fatigue life conservatively to an extent of 31%. The estimated lives based on NPD code are found to be conservative even for freely corroding joints for all the specimens except for the specimen Ts 1.
