ABSTRACT

However, a problem common both to the United States and Europe is the severe regulations concerning the emission and exposure to carcinogens at work [3-5]. This problem in particular affects coal-tar pitches. The transformation of a coal-tar pitch into a carbon material produces the emission of considerable amounts of volatiles, many of which are considered to be carcinogens [6]. For this reason, the use of coal-tar pitches in traditional fields, such as aluminium industries, which operate with Sõderberg technology, is now in doubt.
