ABSTRACT
The backbone structure of cell membranes is the lipid bilayer. This organization is a consequence of the amphiphilic character of the molecular constituents, i.e., the phospholipids, that spontaneously stabilize in water in a lamellar form (Fig. 1). This structure consists of lipid bilayers separated by water.
