ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the quantitative phase analysis of cement clinker and finished Portland cement. Portland cement is a key component of the building industry worldwide, with approximately 1.5 billion metric tonnes manufactured annually (Easton, 1997). The quality of the concrete used in construction, estimated from measures such as 28-day strength, is dependent on the relative abundances of the phases present in the cement. Because these are determined in part by the conditions used in clinker and cement production, knowledge of the phase abundances is important for manufacturing plant control.
