ABSTRACT

Abstract The Volterra equations encountered in problems associated with conduction of heat are examined. The types of Volterra equations observed in heat transfer applications are usually the first, second, or compound types. A Volterra equation of the first kind may be reduced to a Volterra equation of the second or compound kind to improve the stability of the solution. In this presentation, a variational technique is employed to obtain a closed form solution to the compound Volterra equation. A solution technique is introduced and applied to typical conduction problems. This solution is used to predict surface heat flux using experimentally obtained internal temperature data.
