ABSTRACT

Introduction This year has seen many interesting publications on this subject. The non-lipidlowering effects of statins are becoming increasingly important not only in cardio vascular disease (CVD) prevention but also in other diseases of an inflammatory nature. This chapter, although predominantly about statins, begins with a potentially important paper on non-lipid-lowering effects of a fibrate drug, usually prescribed to lower elevated triglycerides (TG). Also included is a paper indicating that the anti inflammatory effects of statins are truly independent of cholesterol biosynthesis inhibition, which has been a matter of considerable debate.
