ABSTRACT

Sand casting is the most economical method of manufacturing multi ton castings. Castings of a few pounds can also be economically made from the process; however, other casting methods, including permanent mold and die casting, are less expensive for large production runs. Sand castings are typically chunky in shape, have a rough surface texture, and have a relatively low-dimensional accuracy relative to other casting methods. The process is amenable to a wide variety of nonreactive alloys. Postprocessing typically includes heat treatment to acquire desirable mechanical properties, finish machining to ensure accuracy of critical dimensions, and inspection to ensure desired properties and shape.
