The Diagnosis of Chemical Deterioration of Concrete by Optical Microscopy

Another important fact to remember when looking at deteriorated concrete is that the surface crack pattern does not reveal anything about the number of breakdown mechanisms which may be present at the same time. Furthermore, the surface crack pattern provides no information about the sequence of occurrences of the different mechanisms. It is well known [1] that when concrete is first cracked by one mechanism other breakdown mechanisms may follow.
