ABSTRACT

This chapter relates to the process of designing products or applications at large. The ‘design of HCI’, with its guidelines, is a part of that process. It may or may not be successful in terms of enabling the user, any user, of the product or application to use it in a satisfactory way. The fact that the usability of products involving HCI is often subject to criticism, in the popular press as well as the professional literature (Isaacs et al., 1996), appears to be a good reason for reviewing critically how the design process of these products is structured, including all trade-offs considered and decisions made.
