ABSTRACT

New technologies in the travelling environment, called intelligent transport systems (ITS), or advanced transport telematics (ATT), can assist travellers, especially those who are older or disabled, both before and during a journey. Some ITS may provide information to the traveller, some may provide warnings in hazardous conditions and some may assist a driver in controlling the vehicle. Emergency call systems and route guidance and navigation systems may increase safety and restore confidence for older or disabled drivers, provided that the controls and displays are designed with their functional impairments and their requirements in mind.
