ABSTRACT

ManyAustralianorganizations,liketheirinternationalcounterparts,are currentlyexperiencingmassivechangetotheirstructures,proceduresand personnelinanefforttobecomemoreefficientandcompetitive.Australia's foreigndebt,problemsinexportperformanceanddeclininginternational competitivenessrelativetootherOrganizationofEconomicCooperation andDevelopment(OECD)countriesarefrequentlycitedasevidencefor theneedtorestructureAustralianindustry.Inaddition,theestablishmentof amoreefficientandcost-effectivepublicservicehasbecomeamajoritemof reformforstateandfederalgovernments.Althoughsomeorganizational changehasinvolvedfinetuning,manyorganizationsareexperiencingradicaltransformationtowardsregainingstrategicfit(seeDunphyandStace, 1990).
