ABSTRACT

Subsurface water can, potentially, subscribe to a significant proportion of the lateral pressures acting on a cut-and-cover structure; it depends upon how close the water table is to the surface. Besides, the rate of the movement of water vis-à-vis the drainage characteristics of the soil mass can influence the response of the ground during the various stages of excavation. This can, in turn, also have an impact on the existing structures in the vicinity.
