ABSTRACT

The M g - G d phase diagram for the full concentration range is shown in Figure 24. It has

been redrawn following mainly the last evaluated version [144] which has taken into

account investigations [99, 148, 166]. Meanwhile, the Mg-r i ch part of the phase diagram

[144] was to an extent corrected according to the last investigation of the Ba ikov Institute

of Metallurgy [108]. The phase diagram shows the existence of four binary compounds,

M g 5 G d , M g 3 G d , M g 2 G d and M g G d . A l l of them are peritectically formed. There is one

eutectic equilibrium on the M g side, and one eutectoid equilibrium connected with two

allotropic forms of gadolinium. The crystal structure of the binary compounds are

described in Table 15. Unl ike other M g - R E compounds, the formula M g 5 G d shows the
