ABSTRACT

In summary, the effect of joint alloying by rare earth metals on mechanical properties

o f M g can be different. Its character depends mainly on the joint solubility of the rare earth

metals in solid M g as compared with the solubility of individual elements. This rule is

applicable the most clearly when the solubility of the rare earth metals is small, as in the

case of the elements of the cerium subgroup. If at least one of the rare earth metals has

significant solubility in solid M g , as one of the elements of the yttrium subgroup, the

strengthening effect from individual rare earth metals can be superimposed on each other

so that the joint alloying w i l l be accompanied by a higher strengthening effect than that

from each of the rare earth metals alone.
