ABSTRACT

Persistent pain is a significant problem for patients having cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) (Koch, 1986). Although CTDs may lead to significant impairments in physical and work performance, the main of concern of the patient is usually their pain. Many CTD patients have difficulty coping with what they view as the uncertain nature and future trajectory of their pain. Some patients may become so anxious and absorbed by the pain experience that they have difficulty functioning. Still other CTD patients develop significant behavioral problems such as avoidance of activities and dependence on medications that exacerbate their pain.
