ABSTRACT

The production of acetic acid via biological means is both of historical significance and the topic of current research. The objective of this chapter is to provide a brief background of bioderived acetic acid, discuss the current trends and directions of ongoing research, and present what we believe to be the optimal process description and economics for bioderived acetic acid. The latter will allow the reader to make comparisons to acetic acid production by oxidation and carbonylation processes as discussed elsewhere in this book.
