ABSTRACT

Nitrification and denitrification are just two parts of the larger nitrogen cycle. Each stop in the nitrogen cycle is actually a different interchangeable form of nitrogen. We know that nitrogen gas makes up almost 80% of the air. This is where the nitrogen cycle starts. Some types of algae can use the nitrogen from the air in their biological processes. The process whereby the algae take the nitrogen from the air and put it together with an organic chemical is known as nitrogen fixation. This name comes from the feet that the algae stick or “affix” the nitrogen to the organic molecule. The algae then get eaten ty fish which are in turn eaten by people. Eventually these organic molecules, with nitrogen attached to them, are all through the food chain. Nitrogen that is attached to or part of an organic molecule is called organic nitrogen.
