ABSTRACT

The value of the pH is used not only in wastewater treatment, but in everyday life. What exact is it? The pH is a measure of how much acid is in the water. One way to describe an acid is by whether it makes hydrogen ions in a water solution. A hydrogen ion is a positively charged hydrogen atom (H+). A good example of an acid is hydrochloric acid, HC1. When it is in water it becomes H+ and Cl". This means it breaks down into a hydro gen ion and a chloride ion. The pH is actually a measure of hydrogen ion concentration. This is somewhat like looking at the concentration of suspended solids in the water. One difference between these two is that the concentration of hydrogen ions can change over a very large range.
