New Theoretical Concepts for Ion-Selective Membrane Electrodes
Knowledge concerning the configuration of the membrane-solution inter face is of main importance in the study of the theory of potential development of ion-selective, membrane electrodes (ISME). In 1968, Gavach et al.  demon strated that the membrane-solution interface could be polarized and that the Galvani potential between the two phases could be used as a driving force for the fol lowing charge transfer reactions: (i) ion transfer and (ii) electronic transfer. The ion transfer processes were mostly studied, because for the electronic transfer there are a lot of difficulties in establishing the correct redox pair due to the prod ucts obtained in the electronic transfer that are a source for the ion transfer current generation. The current generated by the ion transfer is higher than that obtained through electronic transfer, the last could not even be seen and identified in this context.
