ABSTRACT

When hot-dip or mechanically galvanized fasteners are used, or for that matter any coated or plated fastener with a coating thickness that consumes and exceeds the thread allowance, some adjustment must be made in the threads before the bolt and nut can assemble. North American practice is to always overtap the nut thread and never undercut the bolt thread. The process of overtapping usually follows the plating or coating operation.
