ABSTRACT

Higher education (HE) in the United Kingdom has seen many changes during the past decade. Central to these changes has been the movement to lifelong learning in the learning age (Dearing, 1997; Department for Education and Employment [DfEE], 1998). This includes a change of emphasis in education delivery, away from didactic teaching of students to promoting independent student learning. Information and communication technology (ICT) is required to play a key role in this learning process, providing learners of all ages access to a worldwide knowledge base (Selwyn, Gorand, and Williams, 2001).
