ABSTRACT

In today’s complex agriculture and food systems, it is difficult to meet all the regulations and keep a farm or a food business profitable, as well as contribute to food security. In a global society that is facing limits on fossil fuels, ever-increasing population, and climate change, the issues of environment and long-term food security are high priority. Small steps in greening our food production and processing system will

help, but it is essential to examine what is happening in the larger picture. We need to evaluate claims of greening by all players in the food industry, large and small, in order to decide if changes are making a difference, or if they are only greenwashing to enhance an image and increase sales.
