ABSTRACT

The intent of this chapter is to review methodological issues surrounding the question of what constitutes the appropriate human factors certification of advanced aviation systems. In this context, an advanced system is assumed to be one in which there is a high level of system automation and to which leading-edge technologies and design concepts have been applied during its development. The argument presented herein is that the primary objectives of human factors certification must be accomplished within the design and validation phases of the human engineering program.
