I. THE MITOCHONDRIAL THEORY OF AGING

One of the most relevant theories raised to explain aging is the free radical theory of aging, which was first proposed by Harman more than 40 years ago (1). Ac­ cording to this theory, oxygen-derived free radicals are responsible for ageassociated impairment at the cellular and tissue levels (1).
