ABSTRACT

Passenger falls from the doors of British Rail trains have been the source of increasing concern over recent years. Although the number of falls is small in relation to the number of passenger journeys made each year, in the period 1984 to 1991 there were a total of 155 fatal incidents recorded. During 1991/92 the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conducted an investigation into the possible causes of such incidents. A multidisciplinary team led by Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate was assembled to study the various aspects of the problem; the team consisted of various HSE specialists and included ergonomists from HSE’s Research and Laboratory Services Division.
