ABSTRACT
A century of experience has shown that the public is well served by short span steel bridges. A lore developed around their design and construction that led to specifications for safety and durability. There was a time when an engineer could expect to spend several years learning how to design short span steel bridges and this skill would have served him well throughout his career.
