ABSTRACT

Steels used for structural applications may be classified in four groups with progressively increasing strengths: carbon steels, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, heat-treated carbon and HSLA steels, and heat-treated alloy steels. Table I lists typical American steels in these groups and the specified yield and tensile strengths. 1 Standards for HSLA plates and structural shapes in various other countries are listed in Tables 2 and 3, respectively.2
