ABSTRACT

Chromatographic separations should be studied in more detail from the viewpoint of the interaction between kinetic and thermodynamic properties. The conventional equations may provide no information concerning the contribution of surface diffusion to h even though this is an important factor, as shown in Fig. 24. A strong influence of the solute concentration on the mass-transfer coefficient has been reported in many recent publications dealing with nonlinear chromatography [87-90]. This effect can probably be explained by surface diffusion.
