ABSTRACT
The goals of this chapter are to make the readers familiar with the algebraic language and its dialect spoken in numerical analysis and to introduce two fundamental notions: the stability and the fractality of an approximation sequence. Further we present an approximation method which will accompany us throughout this book and which is without any doubt the most natural and most important approximation method for bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space: the finite section method.
