ABSTRACT
The safe use of a technology can be undermined by an inadequate assessment of its associated risks. The possibility of inadequate assessment increases as the technology becomes increasingly sophisticated. This sophistication leads to indirect effects that can go unnoticed by those directly involved with technology development and implementation. Safe use requires an ongoing assessment and awareness of risk and the knowledge of the means by which this risk is reduced or eliminated.
