ABSTRACT

The net result of the first two steps is the production of HCl and vinyl chloride. The HCl can in turn be used in the third reaction, oxychlorination of ethylene, to make additional 1,2-dichloroethane, which can be fed to the cracking unit to produce additional vinyl chloride. By balancing the production of the three steps, it is possible to consume all the HCl. produced. This procedure is not only economical, it avoids the costly problem of disposing of the HCl from the cracking step.
