ABSTRACT

Abstract The present paper discusses modern design of complex concrete structures. It takes basis in the offshore concrete platforms which in many ways have led the development of the design of many other types of complex concrete structures. Reasons are discussed why reinforcement densities have increased significantly over the years. If we are not on the alert, we can end up with more expensive and less durable structures. Proposals to remedy this situation are given. Keywords: Concrete structures, rational design, reinforcement densities

1 Introduction

The design and construction of the offshore concrete platforms built for the North Sea, Fig. 1, and more recently for the Grand Banks off Newfoundland and in Australian waters have in many respects contributed to and in fact led the recent development of modern concrete structures.
