ABSTRACT

The earliest and probably the best known road builders in the UK of which there is still evidence were the Romans. Their early roads were generally made up of three layers of successively graded stones topped with a surface of stone blocks and were often up to 1.2m thick. Most of these roads disappeared during the Middle Ages.
