ABSTRACT
As long ago as 1972, the first international conference concerning the environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden, but it was to take another fifteen years before world leaders were told in no uncertain terms that there would be severe consequences if the pollution and depletion of natural resources was to go unchecked. It was suggested that for development to be sustainable it should meet the needs the present generation without compromising the needs of the future.
