ABSTRACT
Withtheadventofadvancedthin-filmprocessingmethods,ithasbecome possibletoproduceartificiallymultilayeredmaterialswithprecisecontrolof thecompositionandthethicknessofthelayers.Incontrasttoconventionalbulk laminatecomposites,theindividuallayerthicknessinmultilayeredthinfilmscan bereducedtoatomicdimensionsandthereforebecomesthesmallestandmost importantmicrostructurallengthscale.Itisthislengthscalecontrolthatmakes artificiallymultilayeredthinfilmstheepitomeofmicrostructuralengineering.
