Catalysts are substances that reduce the energy barrier of chemical reactions by forming a low energy transition state with a reactant without undergoing any net change in structure. The kinetic consequence is a dramatic increase in reaction rate. Enzymes are biological catalysts that mediate all the chemical reactions of cell metabolism.
