ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the design of unreinforced masonry walls to BS 5628: Part 1. The chapter describes the composition and properties of the three main materials used in masonry construction: bricks, blocks and mortars. Masonry is primarily used nowadays in the construction of load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls. The primary aim of this chapter is to give guidance on the design of single leaf and cavity walls, with and without stiffening piers, subject to either vertical or lateral loading.
