ABSTRACT
I. INTRODUCTION The use of antimicrobial agents for controlling or preventing infection is of major practical importance. Given the adaptability of microorganisms and their tendency to acquire resistance, the development of new antimicrobial agents is a constant challenge. However, antimicrobials carry inherent risks with respect to both environmental and mammalian toxicology [1]. There is accordingly a pressing need for biodegradable antimicrobials with low toxicity profiles.
