EugenGoldstein,wemayrecall,hadfoundin1886that,bypiercing thecathodeinadischargetubewithfineholes,self-luminousrayscould beobservedstreaming'backwards'intothespacebehindthecathode awayfromthedischarge.Theircolorwasstronglydependentonthe residualgasinthetheyalsoappearedinsensitivetothedeflection bymagneticfieldsavailabletoGoldsteinwithpermanentmagnetsfieldsstrongenoughtoreadilydeflectthenon-luminouscathoderays. HavingcoinedthetermKathodenstrahlenforthelatterraysearlier, GoldsteinnowtentativelydubbedtheluminousraysKanalstrahlenatermwhichalsowouldstickalongwiththesubsequent'positive rays'.Themagnetic(andelectric)deflectionofGoldstein'sstubborn Kanalstrahlen,showingthattheyconsistedofpositivelychargedparticles,
