I I . I Introduction The central theme of this chapter is to explore how the nature and properties of the land surface influence the growth of vegetation and the cycling of carbon. This understanding can then be applied to examine how land use influences the global carbon budget (7.3.2), and any implications there might be for processes such as atmospheric circulation and climate change, food production, and the quality and quantity of water resources.
